The author inserts a footnote: “from the Greek peïtheïn, or persuader.” Crediting the discovery of the antipithiatic pill to someone named Babinsky is a joke, as the Paris-born Polish neuroscientist Joseph Baninski had been a key collaborator of Charcot’s in developing the study of hysteria (in which Daudet did not believe) and had developed the concept of “pithiatism,” subsequently associated with “shell shock” in his Hysteropithiatisme en neurologie de guerre (1917), in that context. Joseph Babinski’s brother Henri was an engineer and also a famous cook, who published a culinary guide-book under the pseudonym “Ali Baba.”
